Using the right lane — and staying in it through a turn — keeps traffic predictable at intersections, which is where most lane confusion causes trouble. Get into position early and hold your lane all the way through.
Lanes at intersections
Approaching an intersection, be in the correct lane for your direction and follow any road arrows, staying in the same lane all the way through. Where there are no arrows, turn left from the left lane, turn right from the right lane, and use either lane to go straight ahead.
Right turns with marked lanes
Turning right between roads that each have more than one lane per direction, be in the right-turn lane, signal at least 3 seconds, and turn into the appropriate lane. Turning right into a one-way street from a two-way street, turn from the lane next to the centre line and into the closest lane of the one-way street. Turning right from a one-way or multi-laned road, stay in the same lane throughout — the left lane feeds the left lane, and the right lane feeds the lane just left of the centre line. Where two vehicles turn into the same multi-lane road, both keep to their own lane (left to left, right to right). Always signal at least 3 seconds, and give way to cyclists going straight through a cycle lane.
Changing lanes and passing lanes
If you must change lanes near an intersection, make sure it's safe, signal at least 3 seconds, and look over your shoulder for blind spots — never change suddenly; get into the right lane beforehand. On a road with passing lanes, drive in the left lane unless passing, and if you've been going below the limit, don't speed up at the passing lane — let following vehicles by.
Special vehicle lanes
A lane signed for buses, cycles, taxis or transit is only for those entitled vehicles. Others may enter only to turn or reach a parking space, for no more than 50 metres, and must give way to entitled vehicles. Where the sign shows hours of operation, you may be able to stop or park outside those times — but some lanes operate 24 hours a day.
