Motorways strip out the usual hazards — no intersections, turning traffic, parked cars or pedestrians — but everything happens fast. The rules are about lane discipline, reading signs early, and never stopping.
What makes a motorway different
With no intersections, turning or parked vehicles and no pedestrians, a motorway is simpler than an ordinary road — but the traffic moves very fast, so drive carefully and stay well ahead of what's happening.
Motorway signs
Most motorway signs are green with white edges. Pay special attention to the ones marking where the motorway starts and ends and where particular exits are — such as "Motorway ends", exit signs, and lane-use direction signs.
Driving it safely
Keep left unless you're passing, watch for the exit signs, and get into the correct exit lane in plenty of time; signal for at least 3 seconds before changing lanes. You must not stop (except in an emergency), must not make a U-turn, and must not stop to drop off or pick up passengers. If you miss your exit, don't stop and reverse — carry on to the next exit.
