Horses take fright easily, and a startled horse near traffic is dangerous for everyone. Around them, slow right down and give plenty of room.
Passing horses safely
When you see horses on the road ahead, adjust your driving early — slow down and pass carefully with plenty of room. Don't sound your horn, rev your engine or pass at speed, and avoid overtaking another vehicle near the horse. If the horse and rider are on a bridge or narrow road, or the horse looks frightened, be very careful: slow down or stop — and stop if it's frightened. Approaching a horse at night, dip your headlights. Careless behaviour around horse traffic can see you charged with careless or dangerous driving.
