Horses share the road too, and riders have their own rules for staying safe around traffic. Whether you ride or just drive near them, these are the basics.
Riding on the road
Always wear a safety helmet, and ride on the left-hand side as far to the left as possible. Keep to the side of the road where you can, but don't ride on footpaths, lawns or gardens. Near other traffic, don't ride more than two abreast, and never ride on the right of any moving vehicle. If you're leading another animal while riding, keep it on your left, away from the traffic.
At night
Riding or leading animals at night, wear reflective clothing and carry a torch. A horse-drawn vehicle on the road at night must show a white light on the front right of the vehicle or load and a red light to the rear — never a red light on the front or a white light on the rear.
