About OpenTest

OpenTest in NZ driving theory

A free, AI-built platform for the New Zealand Road Code theory test — 450+ practice questions across every topic, explanations on every answer, and study in your own language.

Why we built OpenTest

Passing the New Zealand Road Code theory test is the first step to a driver licence — but good practice has often meant paying for an app, wading through ads, or studying only in English. We thought that was backwards.

OpenTest uses AI to do something useful and give it back to the community: a completely free theory-test practice platform, with no ads and no paywall. Our goal isn't to help you cram a few answers the night before. It's to help you actually understand New Zealand road rules — so you pass the test and drive more safely afterwards.

What makes OpenTest different

An explanation on every answer

Learn, don't memorise

Memorising answers gets you through one test and leaves you a worse driver. OpenTest is built the other way around.

Every question is linked to the underlying knowledge point — the actual rule it's testing. Get something wrong, and you can jump straight from the question to a plain-language explanation of the rule behind it. Our learning map then tracks your mastery topic by topic, and points you at the areas you still need to work on. You're not grinding random questions; you're closing real gaps in what you know.

The idea
Questions test rules. Rules make you a safe driver. So we connect the two, instead of treating the test as a memory game.

Free, and here to stay

OpenTest is free because we think the basics of driving safely shouldn't sit behind a paywall — especially for new residents, visitors and students who are already juggling a lot. There are no ads, and you can practise a full mock test without even signing up.

Create a free account and we'll also save your mistakes and bookmarks across devices, and unlock topic-by-topic practice from the learning map — but that's a bonus, not a toll gate.
